I take that as a sign that now is the perfect time to resurrect this blog! I've missed it so much!

It's been a while... In that year of absence, I finished doing a research project, applied for my PhD studies, got engaged, got accepted in a school (and also got rejected in some), quit teaching in Ateneo, and got married (and moved out of our house for the very first time)! That was a very eventful year, to say the least. And now, I'm about to finish teaching in DLSU. I'm also preparing for my relocation to the US. This last part has gotten me both nervous and excited. God be with me!

From now on, I guess I'll be talking more about grad school (again! haha!), married life, LDR's, and most probably missing Pinoy foods!

Talk soon!maigarciahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09117144099650902428noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4887319186719675115.post-46678648597248126792013-07-31T08:13:00.001+08:002013-07-31T08:13:12.623+08:00BreakSince 2006, I have made sure to write on my blog (LJ first, then Multiply, then here) at least once a month. Maybe two or three if I'm feeling extra chatty. But I think this era will be coming to an end. I just have too much on my plate right now. :(

Aside from my three "regular" jobs, I'm also working on another research project. Then there's the matter of my PhD application and attending to my personal future plans. Whether it's actual work for those two or just thinking about them is enough to consume my time and energy.

And then of course, as you would've probably anticipated, there's the Manila traffic I'm constantly furious about. If it's not the traffic, then it's a thick-faced girl who doesn't line up in riding the train. THAT SM SALESLADY WHO DID NOT EVEN BUDGE AFTER BEING TOLD THAT SHE'S SKIPPING THE LINE. Let me just say this - makapal ang iyong face. I feel sorry for you and your unborn children! I sincerely wished she wouldn't have appetite for dinner last night and that she'll realize that her cutting the line was the cause of it.

I have become so negative and critical. One highly probably reason for this is my tight schedule. Because I'm always in a hurry, I easily get annoyed with traffic, PUV's taking way too long to wait for passengers (who do not come!), uncivilized people (yes, I'm talking to you, SM saleslady girl), students who slowly walk in rows (I normally walk fast, so even if you weren't walking really slowly, that's still slow for me. Sorry.), people who show up without appointments, and MANY other things. Writing all these down, I actually feel sorry for myself! Where is the ultra positive me??

I'll be back! I'll be back when I'm more collected and cheerful. I'll come back another day. Maybe that's gonna happen when I go back to crafting again. I miss crafting!!!!! You know what, since today is a school holiday, I might just whip out my crafting tools and craft to my heart's content!

Wait, scratch that, maybe just craft for an hour or so! PhD student-wannabe needs to study!

This was emailed to DPWH today, at 6:30am. Automated response says to expect reply in 5-10 days. I shall wait!

To Whom It May Concern:

Good day. I am a professor at Ateneo de Manila and I teach college students aged 17-20. They have all sorts of questions for me, and as their teacher, it is my job to give them sensible answers. Or help them find these answers.

An interesting question that has pervaded our recent discussions is how there's always reconstruction going on in our roads. Let me simplify everything, exclude emotions and angst, and just humbly ask these questions to you of which I expect answers for. We'd rather hear it from you, OUR DPWH.

1. Why do we keep on digging and reblocking our roads (for me, I always get caught in traffic in Munoz Edsa, and today there's another ongoing construction)? I don't really know anything about engineering- but these roads/lanes look perfectly ok- I drive breezily on them. Please enlighten me as to why you have to do it.

2. If we've been reconstructing seemingly fine roads, WHY NOT reconstruct the ones which are in a much worse condition (I mean, really bad)? Take EDSA in front of Trinoma (uneven roads for crying out loud, too uneven an infant could notice it) for example, or Cubao. Don't they need much IMMEDIATE repair?

3. I know you've been reblocking all year round, but how come in Manila (Abad Santos, Rizal Ave), most road works are happening now- further aggravating the traffic situation, what with the start of classes and the rainy season. I really have to ask, WHY?

4. How come some road works remain idle (you don't see anyone working on them or removing the orange cones even if they've been dry for a while. Yes, they're dry- it's been a week)? This case doesn't help us. It pains us, motorists, and it makes us mad.

As I hope you could tell, I am a concerned citizen of this country, and I could bet that I am one of the most disciplined citizens this country has today. With that, let me claim my right to know about the answers to the questions above. I highly expect the answers from you as you proclaim that you're a department we can reach.

I thank you in advance.

Sincerely,
Aileen Garciamaigarciahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09117144099650902428noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4887319186719675115.post-70335949601750028182013-05-16T01:38:00.002+08:002013-05-16T01:38:41.523+08:00Lack of UpdateAnd I arrogantly thought I'll be able to document everything from this trip! WALA!! Haha!

Even the photos I took aren't a lot! I'm so lazy!

And now I am going home! I love spending time with my family here in the States, living their efficient life, eating their fried food, and enjoying the calm and peace- away from the noise of campaign jingles in Manila!

But home is home, and home is where I want to be.

I'll see you soon, Philippines! Namimiss ko na ang sinigang!

Mahal pa rin pala talaga kita. :)

JOKE.

What an escape this trip is! After "suffering" from the scorching heat the last couple of weeks, in about 15 hours, I'll experience the chilly spring weather!

Can't wait to wear my jackets! Yun yon e! :pmaigarciahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09117144099650902428noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4887319186719675115.post-10372091061547353372013-04-05T21:54:00.000+08:002013-04-05T21:54:20.162+08:00Battling Self-Pity
I am fortunate enough to afford to travel a little. And most of the time, like today, I overlook this blessing.

Contrary to what one may commonly think, traveling doesn't make me feel rich; it makes me feel poor and small. Staying in a first world country has made me feel so much of my third world citizenship (but not with third world behavior, that I could tell you). And I am getting ready to feel poor again as I go to the States in a few weeks. (Whut, two dollars for a single french macaron?!?)

Please don't judge me. I know it is BAD to feel this way, looking at the negative side instead of emphasizing this blessing and capacity to go abroad. That is why I want to battle it, too.

So why travel if it makes me feel that way? Because even with that, travel is FUN and humbling. Seeing new places, exposing yourself to another culture, reconnecting with old friends and meeting new ones, and learning and learning and learning - those are priceless. You can't put a price tag on those. And so I wouldn't mind feeling poor for a while in exchange for these things.

Before I knew of my disapproved travel grant requests, I initially planned on not going should I not get any. But then, opportunities do not knock as often, and so I decided to go and use my savings. It was a long and stressful decision, but I am happy that family and friends have been supportive (well, my dad needed a little more prodding).

Then, when I have finally bought my ticket - until now, actually - I keep on thinking about how to make up for the money I'll "lose". I have been extra attentive to possible job stints and more particular with my spending. I also thought of buying crafting stuff and bags there and sell them here (though I could be the candidate for the worst saleswoman ever). I even asked my US-based cousin to look for a temp sitting job which could help me pay for my expenses. Or help me with a little crafting shopping. :p

My cousin said she knows someone who owns a homecare, and though it's far from ideal, I would gladly take care of old men and women to earn some bucks. But my dad and aunts didn't agree of that plan - saying I won't be able to manage the work, and that I'll look pitiful in the scene.

Wishing life were easier, I am left thinking why I had to think of all these considerations before traveling. While some would go to trips, care of their able parents, and get excited about shopping, I am dreading spending more than five dollars for a fastfood meal. And boy, how many meals will I need to eat there. (On a good note, while there, I think I'll finally be losing those extra pounds I've been trying to get rid off!)

I don't have any expensive indulges. And I don't splurge on stuff. Even if my siblings would contest that my crafting tools are expensive, I make sure that I look for the cheapest deals, and the decision process of whether to buy or not is long and disturbing. I am such a low maintenance person, and I say this with pride. I don't envy girls who wear designer clothes or sport expensive bags. I am not embarrased to lug around my dinosaur BB model, while most of my students whip out the latest iPhone. I am fortunate enough to drive a nice family-owned car, but I really wouldn't mind what it is I drive. I am actually getting used to commuting again. Hey, I am finally getting good at squeezing my body in those notoriously jampacked trains.

You know who I envy? People who get to travel. People who get to travel with ease. Will that time ever come for me?

I would like to think and say "yes". But with another future plan in mind, I don't think I could replenish my piggy bank soon. If anything, it would just get leaner.

Here it is (let me say it out here so I'll have some sort of accountability and stand by that decision): I will <strike>try</strike> apply in a number of US universities for my PhD. There, I've said it! Gosh, I didn't know it entails some serious financial investment. Tests alone would cost me a month's salary, plus the application fee for each university. And it's not as if I have the best credentials to feel safe in applying to just one school. The target is five, at the bare minimum. I wish I could say with confidence that it's gonna be worth it in the end, all the expenses and effort, but I don't even know if I will get in. I've been constantly told that competition for slots is keen.

It's a big risk. It's a financial gamble. And then of course, there's the huge possibility of rejection, which I hope, should it unfortunately happen, would not take a blow at my self-esteem. All I'm sure of now is that I have to do this, or else I'll regret not taking this chance. So whether I make it or not, I just have to remind myself that I WANTED THIS.

And so with this new endeavor, I say goodbye to that buy-and-sell plan (no more capital for me), that little shopping spree as a VERY early birthday and Christmas present to myself (time to empty that Amazon cart!), and the plan to not hold back when it comes to my meals (Hello, Sky Flakes and instant noodles! {this I could actually say with delight, haha!} ). Well, if there's a good side to it, at least I know I'm not gonna get any fatter!

While some people do not know where to get their next meal, here I am unrightfully pitiful of myself. I know. I wish I could feel rich again, without actually having lots of money.

Did you know I was like that once?

Please pray with me as I ask for grace. I am missing that.
I am the laziest blogger in the world!

I miss the times when I'd look forward to blogging, pour my heart out, and write with meaning. Now, more often than not, I blog to keep up with my self-imposed rule of blogging at least once a month. I am the worst.

But here are some note-worthy happenings in my life (note-worthy for me, hehe!):

I have just finished a year of teaching in college! And I have survived! I am falling in love with Psychology more and more as I teach it.

I will be attending the SRCD conference this April in Seattle. My MA thesis was accepted for poster presentation - I feel so legit! Haha!

My gosh, I almost don't want to be so emotional about this, but I don't think I can hold it in any longer - Who would've thought I'd be able to do this? Not I, certainly. Who knew I'd be rubbing elbows with the big names in developmental psychology? I'll tell you, the nerd and fan girl in me will go on turbo mode come April!

Also, that dream to travel for work is still there, and I guess this is the closest I could get to it (Although, I didn't get travel grants from Ateneo, La Salle, and SRCD! *endless tears*)

Who would've thought I'll be going to the States again within two years time? Not I, certainly. I remember feeling so dramatic while I was there, telling everyone I may never be able to come back again in the future - what with my visa expiring, and lack of money. But God has His ways, of making me believe, of making my dreams come true. How can I ask for more?

Today, March 27, marks the first anniversary of our first date. Who would've thought I'll be in a romantic relationship after almost 8 months of dating, I who have been perennially single? Not I, certainly. I have actually (sort of) prepared myself for a life spent in singlehood, and I actually didn't have a lot of troubles about that thought. But again, this dear God of mine, swoop in, with just the most perfect timing in the world, and led me to someone who'd care about me like no one ever would.

And last March 24, we celebrated our 4th month of being together. We actually almost didn't, because of a stupid fight. Haha! But all's well that ends well. And all's well that ends with barbecue dinner by the bay. Haha!

Thank you, SM, for this cheap frame! :D

I'm planning to blog more often when I'm in the States- documenting my life in the first world country (but not with a first world lifestyle, hehe!). Although it's just a 4-day conference, I'll be staying for a month. I'll make the most out of it! :)

In other, more mellow news, for tomorrow (Maundy Thursday), you may want try this convenient online retreat constructed by our dear Jesuit priests:
It's celebration after celebration!

Feb 10, a day after Carmel's wedding, we attended Ram's first birthday in Jollibee, Marcos Hi-way. I brought Gerard along! We rode a cab going there (thank God for Sundays - no traffic!). We got there early (again), good thing other visitors arrived early, too.

Gerard was very slow to warm up to the teachers. But once he has warmed up, you couldn't hold him down anymore! He enjoyed the games, the winning, and of course, the food! Hahaha!

He, like all of us, enjoyed the photo booth, too!
Mine's very busy. BUT, happy! I've received several good news, and I'm still waiting for a really BIG news by March. I don't want to blog about it yet 'cause I might jinx it, hehe. Just please pray for me, please? :)

Anyway, this post is all about the crafting stuff I did over the Christmas break. The photos aren't any good, I know, so I ask for your indulgence. :)

We decorated some wooden clothespins (I LOOOOOVE clothespins) with fabric tapes and gifted these to our friends. And because I love stamping, I couldn't do without it. Hehe. Good thing I bought a Christmas-related stamp last November, and it was put to good use.

Don't ask how many, but we made a lot!!

Look what I made! I bought magnetic strips, then I adhered one strip on my table. Put washi tape over it, then voila! I have an instant tiny magnetic "board" Then, I also put magnets on the extra clothespins that I have. I use them to hold my crafting reminders. ;) (the magnetic bottle cap was a gift from a friend - also handmade!)

Wall decal I made for my cubicle. :) The hardest part was choosing what quote to use. I think I chose a pretty good one (self-serving bias aside :) )

Hahaha! Please don't laugh at this item. I've been looking for a three-pronged plug (is that how you even call it?!?) because I saw a project which involved vinyl-ing the plugs. I tried it on my office plugs, but it didn't look so well 'cause the plugs aren't round in shape! Supposedly, the plug will look like a shocked face. Fail? Nevertheless, I just let them be. Hahaha!

Looooove this! This wooden storage actually holds lotion bottles for a foot massage. But I used it as a storage for my tapes! I improvised some more and use a straw to hold a second 'level' of tapes. Now it doesn't make me want to buy new tapes 'cause I don't have any space for new ones! (really?!) Aren't they pretty, all-displayed like that? They add color to my crafting table!

The first things I cut with my Cameo, hehehe! They just have to make it to this blog - it was a monumental event!

Not so crafty, this one, but I laminated my two ID's using my Xyron machine!! I got it for 200 pesos during the craft fair. If that isn't the best of my luck, I don't know what is!

My handstamped Christmas gift wrappers!! Which didn't really see the light of day, 'cause I didn't use them. Hehe! My sister did, but she wasn't happy. Fail number 2? Haha! :p

This is a car decal I made for a preggy friend! I don't own the design, I just actually traced from a Google image, then cut and layered the vinyl. Hope I'll have the chance to give this to her before she pops!

Here's another tumbler design I made for my sister's friend. It's a fairy!!! With the little stars on the left side. It's a nice sight in person, I swear! Hehe!

Here's a candy dispenser I made over the holidays. It was a hit!! ( but only to my 5-year old cousin, hehe).

I joined the bandwagon in an FB group I belong in. The Christmas tree is made of vinyl which I adhered on a red paper. Wish there were nicer and cheaper frames available here.

I cut out money envelopes for some inaanak's (using the 6x6 papers I don't particularly like, hehe - a nice way to get rid of them!).

Christmas favor boxes a friend asked me to do for her. :) She loved them!

Left over fabric tapes I used to decorate the extra gifts. They don't look good! Even I didn't like them, haha! That means kraft paper and I still have some practicing to do.

Can you even see it? This is my first etching project! :D There's an "a" on the glass if you can't see it.

And here's my new crafting 'station' (kunwari). I rearranged my tools, bought a shelf (the one where my Big Shot rests on). Ito na yung pinakamalinis na itsura niya, hehe. This side doesn't show my other cabinet which holds my Cameo and papers.

2013 calendars I handstamped with love!! Needless to say, my friends loved them! Why, because if they don't, they knew I'll force them to. Hehe!

That's a lot of projects, huh. Some worthwhile, some... hmm... I'll get better, I'm telling you! Haha!

Happy 2013, everybody! maigarciahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09117144099650902428noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4887319186719675115.post-29223498138491683912012-12-31T11:52:00.000+08:002013-01-08T21:19:57.686+08:00You're the kindest, 2012!2012, for me, is a year of opportunities, challenges, chances, new things, and hope.

I wanna freeze 2012, only because it has been so good to me. I don't want to forget about this year. Well, I don't think I ever can. ;) But at the same time, since 2012 has been very pro-Aileen, I also can't help but look forward to what's in store in the future. I pray with all my might that 2013 will be as kind to us as 2012 has been. :)

My year in review:

JANUARY - Hmm... I don't remember much! Haha! All I know is that I was so busy with my thesis at this time. Also, it was January that I decided to resign from Xavier and venture into something else. It was not the easiest decision to make, but I think it was just really meant. 'cause everything else will follow through as you will see in the coming months.

FEBRUARY - Thesis pa rin. I was also job hunting at this time. I think DLSU has already accepted me at this point in time. Thank you for taking me in, La Salle!

MARCH - I defended my thesis and submitted it! M.A. done! YEAAAAH! This also marked the last days in Xavier - the place I sincerely loved where I met students I've loved so much and friends I keep to this day. It was bittersweet.

But because of these, I have spent the most stress-free of all my summers!! Haha!

APRIL - I got accepted to teach in ADMU at this time- I was just really the most blessed person in the world. Now, I was not so scared financially to have just a part-time job - 'cause I have two! DLSU and ADMU, no less. UP na lang kulang, hehe. Now, as if these blessings aren't enough yet, my thesis adviser, my brilliant prof extraordinaire, upon learning that I'll be teaching in ADMU, asked me to lead a research project of which I was previously a research assistant. This meant A LOT to me. You see, my professor gives this intimidating aura, not that she tries to e, but that's just how amazingly good she is! And I've always thought that I was just 'another' student to her. Good thing and thank God she was quite happy with my work ethics during my thesis work. So I have three part-time jobs now!

I also went on beach trip with my two high school friends. Save for that stupid jellyfish allergies which required me to wear long sleeves for the next hot summer month, that trip was AWESOME!

MAY - I started teaching in DLSU! The students are nice, the bosses are nice, the people around are nice, Manila drivers aren't. The worst. Manila traffic sucked the energy out of me. Each time I drive! Waaah, please help me! (I don't know who I'm asking help from, haha!)

JUNE - I started teaching in ADMU! I was living the dream! Having been used to a strict 8 - 5 job, I was immensely enjoying the flexible and light hours of my new job. The only downside was the checking of papers, and dealing with the not-so-ideal students. Nonetheless, I was having a ball of a time!!

JULY - What happened in July? Haha!

AUGUST - August was sooo romantic, geekily at least. Haha! I was able to attend, for the first time, the PAP Conference in Cebu (also my first time to fly locally!). Seeing myself on the same floor (literal ha) with my undergrad professors, ah, it was surreal! Not only that, I also presented a paper. I felt so legit! Haha! But wait, there's more. One of the items on my bucket list has been achieved - to become a published writer. :) Well, it may not be the dream exactly, 'cause it was a research paper that was published! Haha! I should have been more specific on that dream, haha.

SEPTEMBER - DLSU Term 1 ends! It was sooo fast! Haha! I enjoy the independence of teaching in college - that's just really how I like it. :) And with this independence came some free time to craft! I asked a dear friend in the States to ship home the crafting machine I bought. My life has never been the same again. Haha! I LOOOOOOVE IT!

OCTOBER - ADMU Sem 1 ends! It was fun getting to know 'teenagers' once again, more especially when they're smart and obedient. Haha! It's hard to part with college students, too, you know. Especially since I'm really used to being attached with my younger students then. But oh well, life goes on. :)

I also started selling some stuff I made from my crafting machine. Very timely for Christmas, I was thankful that the machine has already paid for itself. Well, almost. :) Hehe!

NOVEMBER - I turned 28! Wow, that was quick. So many first's happened at this month. All I can say is that it has been a WONDERFUL month! And with all the crazy traffic and rush December brings, November may just steal the spot for my most favorite month of the year! Haha!

DECEMBER - December got me so busy - my work, my little crafting business, my crazy thoughts. Haha! You see, this is the first time I'm blogging this month! So lazy of me. The Christmas break has made me so lazy. But it has also made me sooo happy. Haha! Ang sarap lang mag-nap ng buong hapon. Haha!

Wait, I don't think my monthly summary supported the opening statement of this entry. Haha! I may have lost all the drama while typing, haha. Bottom line, I'm just really happy - with what's going on with my life, with my family, with my friends' lives. The only thing I'm not happy about is how poor we are in terms of discipline! Really, that's my greatest problem (money's next, haha!) - I love my job, I love my status, I love my friends - my stresses just come from my regular, day-to-day living. Praying HARD for the Philippines and the Filipinos to improve! Fine, that's my single, ultimate wish for 2013. Sana magkatotoo!

Happy New Year, everybody!!!!maigarciahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09117144099650902428noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4887319186719675115.post-90853709368670839692012-11-10T11:11:00.001+08:002012-11-10T11:11:10.407+08:00Handmade Postcard SwapI am so addicted to crafting right now. And yes, I want to quit my day job just to make stuff from papers!

Yesterday was so productive, crafting-wise. I was able to finish my handmade postcard hosted by April. I'm so prompt! Haha! To think that I was even hesitant to sign up at first because I'm afraid I wouldn't have time. Crafting has definitely changed my priorities, haha!

So, here's mine:

My theme was flowers and pink, mainly because I'm a lover of both! And all my supplies cater to that theme, hehe.

I used a white cardstock for the base, adhered a pink patterned paper (I like that the colors aren't solid - what's the term for that?!), embossed a white cardstock, inked the embossed part, added baker's twine, then stamped! Oh, I also inked the edges of the papers. And chomped the corners - my favorite thing to do. Hehe!

And here's how the back looks like!

I love how I was able to use my seldom-almost-never used stamps for this. Luckily, I have this "air mail" stamp, so appropriate! Not to forget, I used my new (and only) wood-mounted rubber stamp that says "hand stamped by:" I love it!

Hope the recipient will love this as I had a wonderful time making it. And looking at it! Haha, parang anak lang!

Oh, just a sentiment, I wish I could take pictures better! That's the next on my to-do list. I swear, my postcard looks so much better in person!! Haha!

I also made another card - this will be my sample card for the make and take portion of the crafting fair we'll be at on Saturday.

The theme is Christmas! :) This is an easel card (it stands up!) and I used abaca twine and kraft paper (to coordinate with the abaca) for the sentiments. :) Very easy to make, hope the audience will like this card as well. :)

I love weekends! I wanna craft I wanna craft I wanna craft!!maigarciahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09117144099650902428noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4887319186719675115.post-7671704529357840832012-10-08T15:37:00.001+08:002012-10-08T15:37:31.068+08:00Shameless Plug: The Present ProjectI wasn't supposed to blog today. I'm quite busy with work and hobby, and I have nothing in mind to write.

But! I saw that the last couple of my posts were dated on the 9th of the month, and I thought today is the 9th (until a few seconds ago!). So just to keep up with what I thought was an incidental "tradition", I'd like to invite you to visit our Facebook webpage:

My crafting friends and I got together and decided to sell some homemade and handmade stuff- a good way to use our hobbies to finally get some return on investments. Hehe!

We will be joining a craft fair in November and this page is to jump start the whole selling affair. :) We're now accepting orders for your early Christmas shopping!

Thank you! :) maigarciahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09117144099650902428noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4887319186719675115.post-4786116521013244622012-09-09T19:14:00.001+08:002012-09-09T19:16:21.455+08:00Goodbye, Sweet Thing :(I have to say goodbye to my everyday wrist watch. Well, to its strap, at least. But it's not as easy as one would think! I love watches and I loved this watch. It was one souvenir, even if I was on a tight budget at that time, I told myself not to forget to buy. It has a pink strap (yey) and it was on sale, too (double yey). Maybe that's the reason why it retired too soon. :(

Now I'm using my mom's watch. And because I was the one who bought it for her, I like it, too.

But this watch...
Who knew the clouds have THIS much water?

We don't live in a village or a subdivision. Actually, where we live has a notorious status. Let's just say I am not proud and happy that we live here. But, it's times like this, just like when we had Ondoy, that I feel so blessed that our place doesn't get flooded (when I see exclusive subdivisions turn into rivers). Maybe it's not so bad to be here, after all. :)

Just like any other person working in the academe (falses consensus?!), I was one of those who wishes that school will be suspended (especially if there's no need to catch up on a lesson). BUT! I am always careful with what I wish for -- class suspension with NO rain. And that happens quite often - as soon as they announce classes are suspended, rain stops. Uncanny timing, I tell you.
But this feeling has been lingering in me for a while now. I just can't help but blame this relentless and inconsiderate rain for stirring up the lonely mood, for giving me extra time (to check eBay every so often and to drool over some crafting stuff!), and for inducing guilt in me. I admit, many times I miss the comfort and routine of my old job, and the company of friends and my cute, little students (especially when your big students aren't the politest people you'll ever meet), but I have found my happy place. Thank God. And this drawing!

Laughing heartily, tears were flowing from my eyes when I was reading this! When the class/exam ended, my student (the author and artist!) actually told me that he has a note for me. I thought it was a letter of apology for not studying harder, since he's been complaining the whole test time. Little did I know that I'll experience 9gag come to life after a couple of hours!

Thank you for this huge strand of laughter on a rainy day, you! :pmaigarciahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09117144099650902428noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4887319186719675115.post-84119880267197090942012-06-20T18:48:00.001+08:002016-09-03T11:48:24.396+08:00Hey, Psych Prof?A student called me just that literally five minutes ago. So... I'm basking in! Hehe!

Here I am typing this blog from the library in Ateneo. And it feels kind of different that I'm here not because I have something to study or there's a requirement to finish. Uh-huh, uh-huh! I have crossed the other side, baby!

People (and by people, I mean the two people who read my blog. Haha! :p), I have resigned from my work as a grade school teacher and am now teaching in the collegiate level. Why? 'cause I'm a poser like that! Haha!

I'm having a great time, so far! Ateneo feels kind of more special now that I'm already a teacher here compared to when I was student. I could think of a psychological explanation for that, but I am too lazy right now.

I actually also teach in La Salle, yeah, the rival school. Why? 'cause I'm also impartial like that. Hehe! Truth be told, I just need money. Hehe!

I don't want to be too sentimental about this career shift that I did because I have other stuff to think about. But when I try to concentrate and take it all in, I feel so blessed that another dream has come true. Back in 2002, I was a college freshman and thought of semi-wanting to be like my professors. But since I had other plans in mind (pre-school teacher was one), plus the fact that I didn't know a lot back then (not that I'm saying that I know A LOT now, alright?!) and didn't deem myself worthy, that professor-plan took a back seat.

Until I was almost done with my Master's. HEY! I am through with my MA! Would you believe that?! This blog formed a life with all my rants and angst about grad school! Haha! Wow, I can't believe I haven't made an official announcement about that! Not that it matters AT ALL, but still! :p

So anyway, here I am now. Not that I ever doubted it, but God must really love me. :) I'm still adjusting with EVERYTHING (Adjustment #1: the drive to Manila is insane, you gotta hate it), but happily learning all that I can from this dream-like experience. And enjoying all those remarks about how I still look like a student! Hahaha!

That's it - I'm ending this blog entry with that vain thought so it will linger on you (and you'll be disgusted, haha!)!maigarciahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09117144099650902428noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4887319186719675115.post-90500282503094967372012-05-23T19:38:00.001+08:002012-05-23T19:38:59.483+08:00Let's Make Greeting Cards!I am in disbelief that I'm writing this blog post! Haha!

This summer, I responded to a crafting website design team call. It's not a secret that I'm not too confident with my artistic skills, so to be chosen as one of the design team members is one of my most unexpected 'awards' in my life!! Haha!

Yeah, you read it right. I MADE IT!!

So now, I'm officially inviting the few people who know this blog address (haha!) to come on over to this wonderful card-making website and make greeting cards with us! It's gonna be so, so much fun! :D See you there!

My friend took a leave from work so she could tour me around. So after attending her class in the morning, she drives for me so I could see the place and our other college friend who lives about an hour away from here. We also drove to Macy's and a couple of other stores for more pasalubong-shopping.

On the first day of my stay in my friend's house, we went to Palm Springs, rode the tram and rose to hundreds of feet above sea level! It was so windy and lovely at the top. :) Then, we went home and ate some buffet dinner, courtesy of my friend's dad! How's that for hospitality and generosity? Too bad I wasn't able to take a photo of our dinner. Maybe I got so busy eating tempura! Haha!

On the second day, we drove to Laguna Niguel to see our other orgmate! She then led us to Dana Point, this Yacht Club where we had the most surreal time of walking by the bay and watching the sunset. If we had boys with us, that would be the most romantic thing. Haha! My friend's mom hosted dinner. Afterwards, we drove to Anaheim to meet my friend's other friends and and for some Hookah experience, hehe. It was my first time and I enjoyed it! We drove home too late that night, and you wouldn't believe that my friend had to be in school so early after that. She only slept for a couple of hours, I think. That is if she had slept at all!

My third day was my last day in the USA. My friend's dad accompanied us and drove us to LAX. But before that, we hit Hollywood Boulevard for some photo ops and souvenirs. A photo by Michael Jackson's star is a can't-be-missed, non-negotiable item on my trip! And was I glad that I had a chance to sit by it! Then off we went to the airport. It was bittersweet. :) :(

Oh, Vegas... You are something! Or how my friend would put it, you are bomb! Wow, there's so much lively energy going on around Vegas. And it's so contagious!

I was so lucky that my friend was so much up to have a Vegas trip. It wasn't even in my original planned itinerary. I mean, I have no relative there, and I didn't know that my friend could drive the distance. Anyway, I am so, so very happy that I was able to experience Sin City! (Not that I sinned, alright? :p ) Like what my friend said, my US trip would not be complete without it. And yes, it's true!!

We got there Friday evening. We just settled our stuff, changed clothes, and off we went to explore. Now, our plan was to just go sight-seeing and hotel and casino-hopping. We were reserving the partying 'til the next day. BUT! When we got to Luxor, this pyramid-shaped casino, we were greeted by some people who gave us free tickets to get in their club! This was about nine o'clock in the evening, I think. We were delighted by the invitation so we went in the club. With free drinks! My friend and I planned to just "dropped by" and leave after a while. But NO! We spent the night dancing and dancing and dancing, until our legs could dance no more! Hahaha! It was such a FUN night! For a home buddy and a morning person like me, nothing beats a night out in breaking the routine. We were dancing in our heels, so needless to say, our feet died. While walking back to our hotel, we had to remove our shoes and walk barefoot! Hindi na kinaya! And hey, apparently, girls do that in Vegas!

We woke up late the next day, of course. We went around again, and I noticed how Vegas looks so different in the morning. It looks more behaved, hehe! The sights were so lovely! And we took lots of pictures! Oh, we ate at Jollibee Vegas, too! How's that?! Haha!

Night 2, now, we're more prepared to hit a club. But first we drove to Fremont, the old Vegas. After that, it's party all night! Haha! We loved dancing!! And the cute European guys around, too! Haha!

The next day, we drove to the outlet stores and did some shopping. And had more of Jollibee Chicken Joy. Hehe!

Vegas was such a crazy adventure with my friend! So many things happened! There was even this one time when her car wouldn't start, and we didn't know what to do! Grabe, that Vegas trip was one-of-a-kind! I'll always have so many stories to tell about Vegas. But as that infamous line goes, what happened in Vegas, stays in Vegas!

And stay it will! :pmaigarciahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09117144099650902428noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4887319186719675115.post-35422898963248631862012-04-22T19:22:00.000+08:002012-04-22T19:23:38.964+08:00Family Time at BakersfieldAfter the overstimulating NY trip, the relaxing and chilling time I had with my cousin and her family in Bakersfield was so much appreciated!

My cousin, along with her super nice husband and kids, picked me up at LAX. Then, we headed straight to a Filipino town in LA (I think) and ate some Filipino food! It was so good to be here, seeing that many Filipinos again in one place! Haha! And if I remember correctly, Wowowee was on! Haha!

Afterwards, we dropped by the Universal Studios City Walk. My eyes were fed again! We also ate some crepe for snacks. Oooh, crepe... And hey, they were playing Charice's song, Pyramid, in the park! Sosyal!

Day 2 was just spent in the house. My cousin had visitors, and we all spent the afternoon playing cards and board games, which I love to death!

Day 3 was spent going around town. The best part was my cousin let me drive their van!! Hahaha! Yey! I was so cautious 'cause I had four kids, all under five, on board! We also went to Michael's, that craft store any crafter would like to live in! I could have died in that place! I just got myself a set of stamps and some notepads for pasalubong. We also went to the outlet stores, an hour away, and that's when I shopped 'til my dollars were no more! Hehe! I loved shopping there, it's so, so much cheaper!!!

The real best part of this trip is spending time with my cousin. She's been in the US for more than five years now. Before, when she was still here, we'd often go out and watch a movie, along with our other cousins. Now, times have changed. She and most of my older cousins now have families, so there's less bonding time for us. We're not the emotional, touchy-feely type of family, so I never knew how much I've missed her.

Now, the second real best part (haha, ang daming best part!) was spending time with and taking care of my nieces and nephews! Kids are so much fun to be around with!! I LOVED THEM. I'd give anything so I could spend another day with them. I hope they won't forget the time when Tita Maimai (said in a very cute, slang way) visited.
I don't remember getting tired walking around D.C. :)

On our fifth day in this lovely town, we were getting ready for our bus ride to New York. New York!!maigarciahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09117144099650902428noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4887319186719675115.post-26576017140305525782012-04-07T12:05:00.002+08:002012-04-07T12:09:28.170+08:00RenoAnd it's not the liver spread! Hahaha, ang baduy!

The Reno weather was a bit too cold for me. But my family there made it warm enough. I wasn't so much of a tourist here, and I liked it. I experienced grocery shopping, bringing my nephews and nieces to school and picking them up, going to the local libraries, washing the dishes, going to the bank, malling, etc. It's like I was given a very short preview of my life there. And I loved it. :)

My aunt and cousin picked me up from the train station. My ride from Salinas, CA to Reno, NV took about 9 hours. I slept almost the whole time through, except for when the next stop, this huge, tattooed guy with an eye-patch (Who wears an eye-patch?!?) took the vacant seat beside me. From then on, I was only like 20% asleep and 80% nervous. Hahaha! But the guy didn't do me any harm at all, he was actually kind of nice. But again, who the heck wears an eye-patch?!?

We got to Reno a bit earlier than scheduled, so the station was still closed, and my fetchers were nowhere. It didn't help that the bus driver did not lend me his phone (as opposed to the uber nice driver back in Salinas who volunteered his so that I could call my friend). I texted my cousin but by this time, I wasn't sure yet if my international roaming was already activated. When the station opened, I used the payphone and called my cousin. What a relief to hear a familiar voice again! And after a couple of minutes, my aunt has arrived. She told me that she spotted me immediately because I was the only one looking "kawawa". Hahaha! She was already staring at me for a second or two before I recognized her. And I realized, later on, that it's because I was so used to seeing strangers that seeing familiar faces seemed sort of strange!

As soon as I arrived, we just ate breakfast then we went on turbo tourist mode!

I only spent a couple of days in Reno, and was kind of regretful about that 'cause I still wanted to spend some time with my aunt. Anyhoo, after three days in Reno, I, with the invitation from my cousin and her family, flew to the East Coast to see Washington, D.C. and New York! That's next. :)
My first stop was Monterey Bay where my college friend and her husband live. It was such a nice and relaxing place... The drive around is very scenic and breath-taking, especially for a Manila-dweller like me. I bet people there don't get stressed as often as we do!

My friend was so generous and hospitable to tour me around the sights nearby. You know, I can still see the sunshine and feel the cool breeze. I really, truly loved it there. It's bittersweet.
Before going to the States, I was at the height of what you can call a laser tag addiction. So, I really intended to play abroad, but I didn't think that I'd find an arena. Anyhoo, we were able to play! Oh, I did make a post about this already, haha! Ugh, addiction it is...

And then, Day 3 is San Francisco Day!!! It's such a bustling city full of tourists and the appropriate amount of noise! Haha! And it's so funny that I coincidentally wore my orange-ish long sleeves, which I didn't know was the semi-official color of San Francisco. Hehe!

I was very lucky that the sky was so clear when we got to San Francisco. My aunt, who's been to the city twice, has not seen the towers of the gate yet because of the clouds. Still many kilometers away, I already saw the two 'towers' standing proudly. Such a sight!

I do say an awful lot of stuff, but believe me when I say that it was so beautiful there. I should make it a serious plan to go back. Let's go!

The night of April 4 last year, I was en route to Reno, Nevada. You know, for records purpose, in case my memory turns its back on me. But, I simply didn't have the time nor the energy to write then as my senses tried to take EVERYTHING in. So, let me do this now. While I am unemployed. Haha!

March 31, I flew out of Manila to visit the States and see my family and friends.

Marquee: Maligayang Paglalakbay

We had a layover at Taipei, then spent the night flying across the Pacific Ocean. When we finally got to San Francisco, I was beyond belief, and at the same time, very thankful for the safe flight and the chance. :)

From the airport, I took the train (station within the airport, thank God) to another train station where I'll take a train, and then a bus to get to my friend's area. All in all, I was in transit for 27 hours, stopovers and waiting time included, before seeing a familiar face again. :)
